Meeting the needs of Specially abled people

As concerned corporate citizens, we can all play a part in helping to meet the needs of disabled Americans. This includes making sure that our businesses and public spaces have ADA signage and are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Signs which identify permanent or important facilities require an ADA sign. This includes signs marking emergency exits, elevators, conference rooms, parking spaces, restrooms, and more.

What are ADA Signs?

ADA signs help the disabled safely find their way around without barriers or restrictions.

The law mandates that ADA signs be designed to strict specifications.

As a Business Owner, Do I Need to Provide ADA Signs?

Yes, it is the law, with few exceptions.

ADA compliance applies to businesses and organizations that fit one or more of these criteria(see the ADA Act for further details):

  • Government agencies (local, county, state, and federal)
  • Businesses that rely on the public for their benefit
  • Privately run companies that currently employ 15 or more employees
  • Non-profit and charitable organizations with 15 or more employees or which operate for the benefit of the public.

Are all ADA signs in Braille? Can I Use Custom ADA Signs?

Although braille signs are amongst the most widely used ADA compliant signs, there are other classifications. Custom ADA signs can be made with non-glare materials, use contrasting text, characters, background colors, and more, providing that the sign size, design, colors, font size, and type all adhere to the compliance guidelines. Contact your sign professional to discuss the various options.
